Part 30: Trigger Happy!

I got the call early Friday afternoon:
  • Trigger that evening at 8:00 sharp (10,000 units HCG)
  • Discontinue stims (no more Bravelle or Menopur)
  • Administer 1 final dose of Ganirelix
  • Start Z-pak Saturday (2 pills at lunch time)
  • No need to return for additional monitoring prior to retrieval
  • Report to clinic at 7:00 a.m. sharp on Sunday for retrieval around 8-8:30
I'd apparently gotten my wish - after only 1 week of stims I was ready to trigger!  The trigger shot for my IUI had been subcutaneous, but this one was intramuscular (i.e. in the butt!).  Paul was in class that night, so Mom was on back-up stabbing duty.  Although she'd worked in her uncle's veterinary clinic for years and helped give lots of shots to animals, she'd never stabbed a human before.  She was a little nervous, but said she was up to the task.  I showed her the video on the pharmacy website that demonstrates step-by-step how to give an IM injection.

We set our phone alarms and attempted to relax in front of the TV until it was time.  At 7:45, I got up and gathered the necessary supplies.  The HCG had to be mixed right before injection, so I laid everything out on the dresser in my bedroom.  At 7:55 Mom evicted all the four-legged observers from the room (they all seemed to want to help) while I mixed and drew up the dose.  At 7:59 I laid on my stomach on the bed and began the countdown.  Mom stabbed me at 8:00 on the dot and I didn't even feel it.  Success!

The rest of the evening was uneventful.  I did my Ganirelix a little later.  Paul came home and the three of us hung out a bit before heading to bed.  Paul had class early the next morning and Mom and I were going to stop for breakfast on our way to the airport.  I went to bed feeling nervously anticipatory.  I didn't want Mom to leave, but felt better knowing that Paul had gotten clearance from his instructor to miss Sunday morning.  He'd also arranged for my MIL to meet us at the house afterwards and stay with me until he was finished with class later that afternoon.  It wasn't the ideal set up, but as I'd learned throughout the past months, nothing about IF is "ideal".
